En Route Sermon Series

We will be studying Paul’s letter to the Philippians on my Sundays with you. I’ve entitled my series: En Route, because that’s what we all are; en route to becoming what God wants us to be. You could say, we’re all in the process of becoming…

That’s the hopeful message of Philippians. We’re not stuck, we’re just en route. We will learn, as we make our way through the Book of Philippians, that becoming what God wants us for us means two things: coming to know Christ better and learning to live out Christ in our everyday lives.

Unique contributions the church at Philippi makes to the Bible

  • It was the first church to be planted in Europe (northern Greece).
  • The only church in the New Testament that is used as a model for other churches.
  • Reading it, helps us to get a proper perspective on unjust suffering, persecution, and even death.

Things you should know about Philippi

  • Philip II of Macedon took over the city in 356 BCE.
  • It was established as a military stronghold by Philip II.
  • In 168 BCE Philippi became a part of the Roman Empire
  • In 42 BCE Mark Anthony and Octavian defeated Brutus and Cassius (the assassins of Julius Caesar) and took over the city.
  • Octavian, who took on the name Augustus, rebuilt the city of Philippi by populating the city with retiring soldiers to ensure loyalty to Rome.
  • Octavian grants this new colony the highest privilege obtainable by a Roman provincial municipality: Jus iltalicum. Basically, this meant that Philippi, at least on paper, functioned under Italian law granting its citizens many rights not usually available to jurisdictions outside Italy.
  • Jews would have been a small minority of the population.
  • Christians were nonexistent till Paul visited the city.
